I absolutely LOVE working with this active ingredient! There are so many benefits to adding this to just about any of the products that I can concoct for any stage of your skin or hair care regimen. Yes – it’s amazing in hair care products also!
Niacinamide is not produced by your body normally but it IS needed for body processes. By dissolving the concentrated powder into hydrosols, water, lotions, or butter products, you can absorb the tiny molecules through your pores very easily. For both skin and scalp care, it’s great for improving the skin barrier by adding moisture and reducing hyperpigmentation.
Niacinamide also has a pH of around 6 and your face should be between 4.7 and 5.5, scalp is slightly higher. This means that you can apply it after showering and by the end of your day (or overnight), your skin should still feel soft and supple and your scalp itching or flaking should be under control. It is amazing for hyperpigmentation (sun spots) as well as adding tons of moisture without a greasy residue. I live in the dry, windy desert of Nevada so the moisture boost is always welcome!
Niacinamide should NOT be combined with AHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) and I tested this to see why! The ‘reaction’ is flushed, red skin (I had a controlled, mild reaction) and I immediately washed the products off. If you unknowingly or accidentally combine the ingredients from multiple products and this happens you will know! You may experience some mild to moderate redness and/or burning sensation. The best way to remediate this is to simply wash your face and use a cooling facial mist or mild, calming serum or lotion with some aloe in it.
While I have studied this ingredient in formulation and completed an additional mini class on Niacinamide, I feel that the possibilities are endless and I absolutely love creating specialized formulas with it. It’s very versatile and can be incorporated into just about anything! If you’re interested in this specialty active ingredient in your next formulation, simply let me know!
