Micellar (pronounced “mi-sell-ar) Water was originally introduced in France in the early 1900’s as a way to gently remove dirt, grime and makeup from faces before indoor plumbing was around and the water sources weren’t purified or treated. While we may have come a long way with plumbing innovations, going back to some of the original ways of caring for our skin can still have great results!
Since starting on this skincare formulation journey, I had never heard of micellar water or even tried it. As with all my concoctions, I try everything on myself and this has been a keeper in the daily routine for my ‘older’ skin. While I truly enjoy a great mask once a week and my daily dousing in the shower, this method is always a follow up to remove any last traces of makeup and it is also great for extra moisturizing before your toner, serum, face cream, etc.
The best way to use micellar water is to either spritz it on your face and use a gentle microfiber cloth or cotton ball/round to wipe away makeup. If you aren’t freshly out of the shower or just washed your face with regular water and a cleanser, you may need a little more or a second spritzing.
What’s in micellar water? Micellar water can be made with different hydrosols (the steam from flowers and plants when essential oils are made) along with very mild detergents that are usually great for any skin type and won’t strip skin of necessary oils. While the formulas are very mild, if you have extremely sensitive skin, you may need to do an additional quick rinse before applying your serums or lotions that lock in that moisture. The great thing is, extra vitamins and other good-for-your-skin ingredients can be incorporated too! That’s important when it’s lingering on your face while you lock in all the goodness with your moisturizer!
