I have been intrigued with this active ingredient since I started my formulation journey in 2022. The scientific name is Centella asiatica and is commonly known as Indian pennywort. For thousands of years, Gotu Kola was mostly used as a medicinal herb. It has also been prized by Daoist masters, monks, and yogis for its cognitive and spiritual benefits

Gotu Kola is a mild adaptogen with many anti-aging attributes as well as Vitamins B and C, minerals, iron, and calcium. These attributes include firming your skin, anti-wrinkle, and being rich in phytonutrient flavonoids that act as antioxidants to fight off free-radical damage. It’s also a collagen and tissue booster which can help with elasticity and help you keep that youthful glow.

Gotu Kola also helps blood flow and healing superficial issues, it may reduce acne blemishes, varicose veins, broken capillaries, and possibly even reduce cellulite! It’s also great for oxygenating the scalp and may even help hair growth.

With all this research, I will add Gotu Kola to my hair growth serum and my Gua Sha massage oils!

There could be a downside – if you are taking cholesterol or diabetes medications or diuretics, it’s suggested not to consume for longer than 6 weeks. I’m assuming that’s an internal dosage of dried herbs and not skincare. When you try any new skincare active ingredient, do a small test patch inside your wrist and always note redness or irritation. If redness lasts more than a few minutes or happens every time you use the product after a few days, it might not be the active ingredient for you.
